Dermaplaning Fact Sheet – Pre/Post Care

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe clinical procedure that exfoliates the epidermis, while removing vellus hair. It has recently gained popularity in an aesthetic setting due to its low risk and immediate results. The procedure is completed by gently gliding a stainless-steel, single use scalpel blade across the skin to remove keratinized cells and peach-fuzz (vellus hair). Dermaplaning can help smooth scarring and reduce uneven skin tone and minimize fine lines.

This treatment can be very effective two weeks after IPL services in order to assist the skin in turning over and to exfoliate the remaining pigment that is wanting to turn over. This treatment will give you a healthier, radiant appearance. Removing hair and excess cells from the skin's surface will allow skin care products to penetrate deeper and will give a smooth surface for makeup application.

This treatment is not recommended for clients that have uncontrolled diabetes, active acne, pustular rosacea, active sunburn, facial rashes, active herpes simplex, open lesions on the face, nickel allergies or are on blood thinners. Please review our contraindication sheet and feel free to ask any questions that you may have!

Preparing for your treatments will allow your skin to heal by reducing risk. While dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure, it is still good practice to care for the skin pre-procedure in order to obtain the best results possible. Please read our contraindication list carefully and while completing the Dermaplaning Client Medical History Consent/Release answer honestly and thoroughly.

Discontinue the use of any Retinol/retinoids, AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc) and BHAS (salicylic acid) 72 hours before treatment.
Do not consume any alcohol/recreational drugs 72 hours pre treatment.
No sunburn by tanning booth or salon.
No waxing/electrolysis/depilatory creams 5-7 days pre treatment. Do not shave your skin the day of to avoid irritation.
Overall, your skin must be in its purest and functional state before going through with the procedure.
No sunburn, tanned skin, broken, infected or irritate skin.

There is a risk of some nics or scrapes occurring. While these would be minimal and very superficial, we encourage clients to rest and avoid talking or moving their face during the treatment.

Immediately after treatment your skin should feel fresh, clean and look smooth and healthy. As dermaplaning is a topical peel, you can resume your normal activities immediately after. After every treatment we recommend that our clients change their pillowcase and use a fresh towel – use care practices that avoid contaminating, wetting or irritating the freshly treated area.

Continue using hyaluronic acid or a growth factor serum to adequately moisturize the skin. Use a clean towel to pat dry. Do not rub, scratch or otherwise pick at the skin for any reason.

Every client will have a different inflammatory and healing process so please treat your skin kindly during the healing process to ensure you have the best result possible with the least amount of risk.

Sunscreen must be work after treatments to prevent hyperpigmentation if sun exposure occurs. It is best practice to wear sunscreen everyday and reapply multiple times per day.

For 24-48 hours following your treatment we recommend against these activities:

• Excessive sweating (gym, leisure exercises, yoga, hot yoga etc.)

• Avoid chemically treated water (pools, saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms etc.)

• Avoid tanning beds and direct sunlight – cover the area and wear powdered sunscreen

Please use your discretion in caring for your skin post treatment and do not partake in any activities that may risk your healing.

Please avoid the use of self tanning lotion or sprays for at least one month following the treatment. Gentle care includes no waxing, threading, exfoliation, laser service etc immediately after treatment.

2 week rest time is required between laser hair removal sessions and your dermaplaning treatment.

This treatment is safe for all skin types and does not cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker. Shaving or dermaplaning does not affect the structure of the hair follicle and hair type and density is determined based on genetic factors, body location, age, gender and hormones. Vellus hair is “fuzzy” and soft hair and will grow back in the same manner as it was existing prior to the treatment.

We care about your experience so if you have any questions related to your care, please contact us.
