Indications: IPL Skin Rejuvenation (Photofacial) - Anti-aging (collagen production), systems of rosacea, small spider veins, hyperpigmentation or pigmented lesions (age spots, freckles), elasticity changes (skin roughness), enlarged pores, melisma, mild to moderate acne.

Definition: A Photofacial is skin rejuvenation using light therapy and heat to gently warm the dermis and target surface pigmentation. It stimulates the cells to produce collagen making the skin tighter and more elastic and also heats the sebum, unclogging pores to contribute to a clearer looking complexion. This treatment will target pigment and create clearer, brighter skin.

Typical treatment area is the face but other areas of the body (shoulders, neck, hands) can also be targeted.

Devices:  VL 540 Harmony, stationary or in motion for blending and selective passing.

Frequency: 1-6 treatments are usually required, with a resting time of 4 weeks. Can be used in conjunction with Microdermabrasion or alternative peel treatment 2-3 weeks after light treatment.

Pre-procedure:

  1. Avoid direct sun exposure for 1-3 weeks prior to treatment, especially tanning beds.
  2. Prep skin for treatments - -avoid heavy exfoliation, products etc. Gently cleanse skin the night before and use a light moisturizer and sunscreen.
  3. Be aware of any medications, skin conditions or products that you are currently using that may affect your skin or photosensitivity to light.

What happens during a treatment?

  1. Client forms and consents should be signed 24 hours prior to your appointment by using our online questionnaire.
  2. Consultation of the skin, treatment intensity and frequency is determined.
  3. Treatment begins with test shot on small area and finishes with a full pass over area being targeted.
  4. When treating men, we may not pass over the facial hair growth area such as the beard and moustache. This is up to the discretion of the client and may create more sensation due to the level of melanin of the hair follicle under the surface of the skin and may also halt hair growth.

What Should Clients Expect?

  • 20-30% improvement over 30-45 days.
  • First 48 hours - there may be some redness and hotness to the skin, warm to the touch and possibly a slight sunburn feeling or a slight swelling of the skin. These are normal reactions.
  • May experience the skin purifying itself, bringing oil to the surface as the skin cells migrate.
  • Week 1 - Shedding of skin cells, including a darkening of skin damage and freckles.
  • Week 2 - Lightening of and sloughing of old skin.

Best results are found in a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 28-45 days apart. Can be used as a standalone procedure for less dramatic results.

After series of treatments are completed, may require maintenance with every changing season.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Transient redness, mild swelling, crusting, hyperpigmentation -- treated easily with use of ice and aloe and should disappear within 4-6 weeks.
  • Clients with history of hyperpigmentation and melisma should be treated with caution.
  • Laser treatments occasionally have the side effect of hypo/hyperpigmentation and scarring — ensure skin is cooled properly and cared for before and after treatment.
  • All patient concerns, side effects and complications should be addressed and documented.

Please read through post care instructions carefully.

Post Treatment Care---Photofacials, Vascular & Pigmented Lesions

  1. Do not rub, pick or scratch the area being treated.

  2. For the first few days after treatment wash area gently with water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh exfoliates or salicylic acid and heavy anti-aging products.

  3. Keep the treated area out of the sun. If sun is unavoidable, use a SPF daily and be aware of direct sun exposure by wearing hats or other coverings to exposed skin.

  4. Be careful with hot water until healed. Hot tubs, saunas etc. should be avoided for up to a week.

  5. If skin is inflamed, use Aloe Vera gel or healing ointment until inflammation resolves and the area is healed.

  6. Avoid excessive exercise and sweating for 1-3 days during the healing period.

  7. Keep clothing from rubbing the treated area and avoid other irritation.

  8. Notify Newity Laser should you have any prolonged redness, excessive puffiness or other unusual side effects.

Important Facts To Remember

  1. There may be slight redness, puffiness and very occasionally, mild blistering of the treated areas lasting from several hours to 3-14 days.

  2. Pigmented areas (freckles, sun damage, etc.) will continue to darken for one week following the treatment, especially in the instance of heavy sun damage.

  3. Pigmented areas may “crust”, “flake” or have a raised “coffee grain” texture. This will naturally exfoliate off within a two week period. Do not pick or rub the area to avoid potential scarring.

  4. Mild itching of the skin may occur after the treatment. Use cold compresses and avoid a rubbing motion.

  5. Good skin care will help to minimize risk of complications.
